As you may already be aware, NSFAS exists to help eligible students who wish to enroll in TVET colleges or public universities in South Africa complete their studies. All eligible students will receive tuition assistance, housing assistance, and other benefits as detailed on the NSFAS official website, which you can visit here.

What is required during the Application Process?

NSFAS may need more information from you to process your application, check what supporting documents are required and ensure that you have all the relevant information:

You will need the following to complete your NSFAS application:

  • Your own cellphone number and email address
  • Copy of your ID or birth certificate
    ID copies of parents, guardian or spouse (If applicable)
  • Your proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable)
    Your parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income
    If you are a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income will be required
  • Applicants with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form,
  • An applicant who is recognised as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form

what are the requirements to apply for NSFAS

To process your application, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) may require extra information from you in the form of supporting documentation. Make sure you have all the necessary information before submitting these needed documents.

Students from low-income and working-class backgrounds who are enrolled in one of South Africa’s public universities or TVET colleges are given financial aid by Nsfas. The Nsfas bursary provides funding for transportation, housing, and other necessities for students in addition to covering your tuition fees.

You will need the following to complete your NSFAS application: 

  1. Your own cellphone number and email address.
  2. A copy of your ID or birth certificate.
  3. ID copies of parents, guardian or spouse (or death certificate where applicable).
  4. Marriage certificate (where applicable).
  5. Your proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable).
  6. Your parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income; if you are a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income will be required.
  7. A court order (where applicable).
  8. Applicants with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form.
  9. An applicant who is recognised as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form.
