The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) is a government organization established by Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973. NECTA is in charge of carrying out all national exams and evaluations in Tanzania.
In April 1971, Tanzania Mainland left the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) to administer its own exams, which led to the creation of NECTA. Zanzibar left the EAEC in 1970. Before the pullout, Tanzania participated in international secondary school exams that were previously given by the East African Syndicate and the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate alone. This took place between 1968 and 1971.
