The Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973 created the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA), a government institution. In Tanzania, NECTA is in charge of conducting all national assessments and examinations.
In order to offer its own exams, Tanzania Mainland withdrew from the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in April 1971, which prompted the establishment of NECTA. In1970, Zanzibar left the EAEC. Tanzania took part in international secondary school examinations, which were previously administered by the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate alone, along with the East African Syndicate between 1968 and 1971, prior to the pullout.
