Organizational Setting
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports governments and regional bodies to address their needs and priorities in achieving food security, reducing hunger and malnutrition. This includes developing capacities of National Plant Protection Organizations in fulfilling their legal mandates ensuring suppression and eradication of plant pests and preserving international trade. FAO is currently implementing a project titled “Strengthening Plant Health Services in Tanzania for Enhanced Food Safety”.
Reporting Lines
The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative in Tanzania, and direct supervision of the STREPHIT Technical Advisor in Dodoma and Assistant FAO Representative in administration.
Technical Focus
The incumbent will drive STREPHIT project and Representation staff within duty station and upcountry mission and provide support in other clerical duties as may be assigned. Driver (STREPHIT) at FAO February 2024
Tasks and responsibilities
The Driver will undertake the following tasks: Drive the Project and country office staff and their official visitors on official trips, missions, various meetings, on occasions as necessary and other locations in the country. Meet staff and official visitors at the airport, facilitate immigration, customs formalities, hotel check –in, and other formalities. Maintain logbook Records on official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, transportation/vehicle related expenditure, servicing, repairs etc. including collection of invoices and submission for payment. Ensure day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s); checks oil, water, battery, tires, etc.;
perform minor repairs and timely arrange for any other repairs necessary to keep the vehicle safe and technically sound at all times; maintain the vehicle(s) in clean conditions. Handle local and organizational formalities when involved in an accident; ensure that in this case all organizational and local/country rules, regulations and procedures are followed correctly. Collect and deliver mail, documents, pouches, and other communications / items from and to the country office; go to the post office, government agencies, other UN agencies, institutions, project sites as required. When needed, assist the country office staff in performing simple clerical duties such as, making photocopies and keeping records, etc. Ensuring security of FAO staff and property while driving, report to radio room as required while on mission. Perform other related duties as required.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• Secondary school education;
• Possession of valid driver’s license.
• Minimum five years of work experience as a driver. Flawless, safe driving record;
• Working knowledge of English and Kiswahili;
• National of Tanzania.

Technical/Functional Skills
Good knowledge of the local driving rules and regulations; skills in minor vehicle repair. Fluent in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili Certificate of good conduct. Ability to operate modern PC-based electronic communications systems Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams. A high degree of punctuality and reliability is required. Ability to cope with extended working hours. Working experience with UN agencies is an added advantage.
