In Tanga, cerebral malaria and black water fever are the two most common kinds of severe malaria, accounting for the bulk of deaths. The notion of a hospital was developed since there was a shortage of a suitable health facility (hospital) at the time. Dr. Alexander Berker, Tanganyika’s first Chief Medical Officer, was given the concept.
The Liebels Hotel, which stood in front of the Sea View Hotel, was rented out and used as a hospital before the Regional Referral Hospital buildings were built. Dr. Alexander Berker had completed the drawings for the Government Hospital, which is still in use today, therefore the institution was only used for a short period of time. A gas station now stands where the historic Liebels Hotel once stood. Nine years later, in 1896, the present Tanga Regional Referral Hospital was completed.
