The district is situated in the southwestern part of Tanzania, covering an area of 16,070 square kilometers, with 14,965 square kilometers of land and 1,105 square kilometers of water. It shares borders with neighboring districts: to the west are Momba, Milele (Katavi Region), and Sumbawanga (Rukwa Region); to the east lies Chunya District; to the north is Sikonge District (Tabora Region); and to the south is Mbozi District (Mbeya Rural Region). As of the 2012 census, the district’s total population is 133,692, comprising 67,603 women and 66,189 men. It consists of 2 divisions, 18 wards, and 43 villages, and serves as the administrative center for the Songwe province.
